Experienced hikers can tackle Mount Haystack, the third highest peak in New York, and Ampersand Mountain, a three-mile trail that starts off easy but gets steeper and rockier the further on you go. Of course, with its six-million acres of wilderness, the best way to soak in the fierce fall colors is with a hike. The Adirondacks (pictured) has one of the longest fall foliage seasons in the country, with the areas of Lake Placid and Tupper Lake typically reaching peak ahead of other areas of the region.
